DISCLAIMER (2024) – Masterful Storytelling by the Director of Gravity
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

This drama mini-series from Apple TV+ features a distinguished cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Lesley Manville, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón and based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renée Knight, “Disclaimer” TV platform signifies a notable departure for Cuarón, who is renowned for “Gravity” (2013) and “Roma” (2018). The series narrates the story of Catherine, a successful documentary filmmaker whose life unravels upon receiving a revealing novel that appears to be about her.
“Disclaimer” primarily serves as a character study, not only of the protagonist, Catherine, but also of the supporting characters that surround her. The dialogue-heavy script is executed masterfully, owing to the outstanding performances delivered by the ensemble cast. Cate Blanchett is exemplary in her portrayal of Catherine, capturing the character’s complexity and internal conflict with finesse. Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his comedic roles in the “Borat” films, also makes an impact in a serious role, demonstrating his versatility as an actor.
The series employs parallel narratives that intertwine, culminating in a final act where all narrative threads are resolved. The flashback scenes featuring a young Catherine are particularly captivating, offering both intrigue and a bold sensuality. Alfonso Cuarón’s heavy use of voice-over narration, although often contentious, enhances the narrative in this instance. It effectively creates the experience of reading a novel and witnessing its vivid imagery materialize on screen. Alfonso also demonstrates his talent in filming scenes involving elements of nature in the sea rescue sequence involving rough waters. There is a level of authenticity here which is not usual for TV series. His meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the raw power and beauty of the natural world add a visceral layer to the viewing experience, making the audience connect with the characters’ turmoil and struggle depicted on screen.
While “Disclaimer” may not appeal to all viewers, particularly those who are impatient, it offers a rewarding experience for those who appreciate profound human dramas with powerful and poignant messages. For those who enjoy character-driven stories that delve deeply into personal and interpersonal dynamics, “Disclaimer” is highly recommended.
