ABSOLUTION (2024) – Not Liam Neeson’s finest work but not his worst either!
Rating:⭐⭐ 1/2
Irish actor Liam Neeson continues to release films annually with remarkable consistency, many of which share the recurring theme of a sympathetic, aging lone killer attempting to retire from a life of violence, yet inevitably being drawn back into it. Neeson is renowned for his portrayal of tough characters, imbued with a strong sense of conviction. However, as he ages, his recent films have become noticeably less action-oriented and more subdued. In Absolution, Neeson portrays an aging gangster striving to distance himself from his violent past while attempting to reconnect with his family. Notably, his character remains nameless (referred to only as “THUG” in the subtitles) throughout the film, despite interacting with many other named characters through the course of the film.
It is easy to dismiss this film as another lackluster attempt to cast Neeson in a semi-action thriller. However, under the skilled direction of Norwegian filmmaker Hans Petter Moland, Absolution transcends expectations. Moland’s keen audio and visual acumen enhances the film’s aesthetic appeal. The characters are portrayed with depth, avoiding one-dimensional clichés and conveying a sense of authenticity. Neeson delivers a commendable performance, even though his character is unapologetically downtrodden in an unsympathetic role.
As the title suggests, Absolution centers on the theme of seeking forgiveness for one’s sins and being liberated from guilt. The film’s weighty theme and deliberate pacing may not appeal to those seeking pure action. While it may not represent Neeson’s finest work, it certainly does not rank among his worst. Ultimately, the film conveys a positive message amidst a backdrop of negativity, which is commendable.
Despite Mr. Neeson’s continued habit of appearing in B-grade movies annually, I remain an ardent admirer. His films, regardless of their budget or critical reception, are always worth watching. Neeson possesses an appeal and screen presence that harken back to a bygone era of cinema, one that is rapidly fading in today’s industry. Such actors, who bring a unique magnetism and gravitas to the screen, are rare and should be cherished. Liam Neeson is undeniably a treasure whose contributions to the film industry should be valued and celebrated.
