Emily in Paris season 4

Just when you thought the series was becoming too repetitive and redundant to warrant any future seasons, it took a refreshing turn in the second half of this season, reviving some level of interest to keep our attention.

Season 4 was presented in two parts of five episodes each. After a seemingly long two-year hiatus since the Season 3 cliffhanger, this new season’s Part 1 was truly underwhelming. The scandalous ending to Season 3 was simply dismissed as a non-event, and the storyline quickly returned to a repeat of Emily and her boyfriend chef Gabriel’s on-and-off-again relationship. Nothing new was introduced, and it felt like we were watching previous episodes of the series. Part 2 introduced us to Emily’s new crush, Marcello, an Italian she met in the French Alps. This new addition provided an excellent reason to relocate the action from Paris to Rome. The episodes set in Rome and the Italian countryside were unquestionably the best of the season, preventing it from being a complete disappointment. The location shots were stunning and added a natural romantic mood to the story, despite the shallow plot and obvious direction the story was taking us. It’s a fantastic idea to take Emily in Paris to the next level, Emily in Rome. It was refreshing to see Rome’s beautiful scenery instead of the same old Paris sights. There was also an obvious nod to Audrey Hepburn’s classic Roman Holiday, with a dizzying whirlwind tour of Rome’s iconic landmarks on a Vespa. Without a doubt, Emily and her co-stars looked stunning in their costumes to complement the backdrop.

Aside from the eye candy, the series has a few standout supporting characters. Emily and Gabriel’s on-and-off-again relationship is becoming increasingly annoying, but her close friend Mindy (played by the multitalented and stunning Ashley Park) and boss Sylvie (played with class by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) never get old. Ashley Park, as usual, steals the show every time she appears, and we get to hear her incredible singing several times. Perhaps they should consider a spin-off series, Mindy in Paris? Philippine’s Sylvie is another captivating character. She embodies maturity and confidence, as well as beauty, which draws viewers in.

Season 4 is, admittedly, the series’ weakest season to date. Given Part 1’s five episodes, it would be understandable to skip the series at first. However, the final five episodes of Part 2 saved the season from being completely lost, successfully reviving some of the series’ original charm. Emily in Paris remains a prime example of a guilty pleasure. It transcends and doubles down on the silliness with irresistible doses of beautiful scenery, high fashion, campy humour, music, and fairy tale romance. Who could fault that? At the time of writing, Netflix confirmed that the series will have a fifth season. I believe it would be renamed Emily in Rome.
