ADOLESCENCE (2025) – A drama that reflects the ugly side of society today
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

“Adolescence” is a distinguished British series that narrates the fictional story of a 13-year-old boy accused of murder. The narrative commences with a dramatic police raid on the residence of the accused followed by his subsequent arrest, culminating in an outcome 13 months later that leaves viewers feeling mentally and emotionally drained. The filmmakers’ accomplishment of this feat with merely four episodes is commendable.
Director Philip Barantini, renowned for his 2023 film “Boiling Point,” which showcased his expertise in real-time storytelling using a continuous long shot, has employed a similar technique in this series. Each episode is presented as a single continuous take, a technique that is challenging to master but, when executed proficiently, results in compelling viewing. The camera transitions seamlessly from location to location, and notably, in the second episode, where it shifts from ground level to an impressive aerial drone shot without the aid of computer manipulation. Every minute and every dialogue in each episode are intricately woven to ensure continuity and provide insights into the characters’ thoughts. The significant timeline gaps between each episode necessitate that viewers remain attentive to connect the story while gaining valuable insights into the various characters’ personalities and thought processes.
Beyond technical excellence, “Adolescence” is a tour de force in terms of its performances and writing. The story is authored by the multi-talented British actor Stephen Graham, who also portrays the pivotal role of the father of the accused. Stephen Graham, who was also the lead actor in Philip Barantini’s “Boiling Point,” derived inspiration for his story from reading about real-life incidents in the UK. His portrayal of the father is profoundly moving. The series also introduces the remarkable young actor Owen Cooper, who plays the accused. Apparently, this is Owen’s first acting role, and he excels in it. He convincingly portrays a wide range of emotions. This is particularly evident in the series’ third and most powerful episode, which focuses on a meeting between the young boy and a child psychologist.
The term “Adolescence” refers to the transitional phase of physical and psychological development from puberty to adulthood. While the film centers on the 13-year-old adolescent and the gravity of the crime he is accused of, it delves deeper to explore and comment on various social elements. An adolescent’s development in today’s world is influenced by multiple factors, including upbringing, the education system, social media, and bullying. While a guilty verdict may be borne by an individual, society and the systems that failed them are also culpable.
This series is often difficult to watch, not because it is bad, but because it serves as an authentic and stark reminder of the flaws in today’s world and how they can lead to a collapse in basic civic-mindedness.
