Towards Zero is a three-part murder mystery series from BBC based on the 1944 novel by Agatha Christie. Set in the 1930s, the story unfolds in an idyllic coastal mansion on the southern coast of England. Fans of Christie will undoubtedly be excited by this adaptation, given the scarcity of recent TV interpretations of her work. Although Towards Zero was previously adapted into a feature film in 2007, this French production largely escaped the notice of English-speaking audiences.

Unlike Christie’s famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, Towards Zero features the atypical Inspector Leach as the central detective. Leach is an imperfect and flawed character, still haunted by his World War I experiences and occasionally suicidal. Despite these challenges, he takes on the role of solving the case. The plot is quintessential Christie: a group of people gather at the opulent home of the ailing aristocrat Lady Tressilian, including her nephew Nevile, a recently divorced tennis player, and both his new and former wives. Amidst this gathering, a murder occurs, and the cast of characters, each with motives, are soon embroiled in the investigation.

As an ardent admirer of classic murder mysteries, I approached Towards Zero with great anticipation, given its promise of a compelling whodunit. The breathtaking seaside setting, the lavish aristocratic environment, and the intriguing plot, complete with its clockwork surprise elements, set the stage for an engaging viewing experience. However, familiarity with the genre can sometimes lead to predictability. The production’s staged and rehearsed feel made it easier to discern the red herring clues, thereby diminishing the impact of the final revelation.

The cast, largely composed of unfamiliar faces, delivered adequate performances, though none stood out as exceptional. The most notable name, Anjelica Huston, is somewhat underutilized, spending much of her screen time confined to bed as Lady Tressilian. The series’ strengths lie in its cinematography and costume design, which contribute to its visual appeal. While the murder plot may not be the strongest adaptation of Christie’s work, it is far from the worst, especially when compared to the more recent adaptations like Why Didn’t They Ask Evans (2022) and the dismal Murder Is Easy (2023). Approach this series with modest expectations, and it may still offer a satisfying experience for Christie enthusiasts.
