Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie star as David and Sarah in “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” a film that aspires to whisk its audience away on a romantic adventure but instead leaves them stranded in a fog of forced whimsy and missed connections. Meeting at a mutual friend’s wedding, these two isolated souls are thrown together not by fate, but by a mysterious car rental company with a GPS that seems to have its own agenda. What ensues is a fantastical road trip—one that requires a Herculean suspension of disbelief from the viewer.

From the very first scenes, director Kogonada chooses a fantasy-laden approach, complete with a magical navigation system steering the couple to peculiar pit stops. Here, in the middle of nowhere, David and Sarah encounter doors that open into pivotal moments from their past—a narrative device meant to evoke wonder but which ultimately feels contrived and overused. While the concept promises a “big bold beautiful journey,” the execution is anything but enchanting.

Both Farrell and Robbie are actors of formidable talent, yet here they seem adrift, their performances lacking the spark required to ignite the film’s romantic core. The chemistry between them is tepid at best, perhaps because the script gives them precious little to build upon. Instead, the screenplay leans heavily on saccharine dialogue and melodramatic set pieces, each designed to tug at heartstrings but instead ringing hollow and manipulative.

The movie’s structure becomes painfully predictable: each magical door ushers in another overwrought, cringe-inducing vignette, a parade of emotional moments that feel staged rather than sincere. The narrative momentum falters, stumbling towards a conclusion that is all too obvious from the outset.

Yet, amidst the mediocrity, one brief scene manages to shine: David’s impromptu song and dance recalling his college musical days. In this fleeting moment, Farrell’s charisma and hidden musical talents are on display, offering a glimpse of what the film could have been. Robbie, meanwhile, is left with little to do but smile and act like she is still on the set of Barbie.

Ultimately, “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” proves to be a misadventure, lacking the magic and emotional resonance its title suggests. The film marks a disappointing turn for director Kogonada, whose earlier works “After Yang” and “Columbus” succeeded through grounded storytelling and subtlety—qualities sorely missed here. This is one journey best left untraveled.
