ripley-2024-netflix-mini-series-review-1200x720

As we wrap up 2024, it’s time to reflect on the captivating TV series that graced our screens this year. The abundance of high-quality shows offered a rich tapestry of storytelling, characterized by compelling writing, outstanding performances, and unforgettable characters.

One of the standout elements across these series is the depth and development allowed by the extended format, which provides a more immersive experience compared to traditional films. The actors excelled in bringing their characters to life, making the viewing experience both mentally and visually enriching.

My top pick for the year is RIPLEY, a psychological thriller based on the 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” starring Andrew Scott. The series distinguished itself with its noir black-and-white aesthetic and the breathtaking Italian landscape. The strong performances from the ensemble cast, combined with the beautifully captured cinematography, made it a truly exceptional show.

My full list of favorites in order of my personal preference are as follows:

  1. RIPLEY
  2. MONSTERS: THE LYLE AND ERIK MENENDEZ STORY
  3. THE NEW LOOK
  4. THE CROWN (SEASON SIX)
  5. THE DAY OF THE JACKAL
  6. SHOGUN
  7. TOKYO VICE (SEASON TWO)
  8. FEUD (SEASON TWO)
  9. DISCLAIMER
  10. BABY REINDEER

As we reflect on the past year, it’s clear that many of these series’ quality can rival their movie counterparts. Though they may not have the immense budgets typically associated with Hollywood blockbusters, they compensate with innovative and creative storytelling. The performances in these series often astound, being so well-acted and Oscar-worthy, with big-name stars taking on complex roles that are richly developed thanks to the extended format.

Some other series that provided countless hours of entertainment and are worthy of mention include DARK MATTER, SUGAR, JOAN, and THE SERPENT QUEEN (SEASON TWO). However, no year is without its disappointments. Among the less favorable offerings were MONSIEUR SPADE (with Clive Owen), Agatha Christie’s MURDER IS EASY (from the BBC), and TEACUP. The series that undoubtedly takes the title for the worst for 2024 is THE ACOLYTE, Disney Plus’s misguided dive into the Star Wars universe. It’s like they tried to blend lightsabres with a woke agenda and ended up with a recipe for disaster. A true galactic flop if there ever was one!

As we close out the year, it’s important to celebrate the high points and learn from the lows, anticipating what the next year will bring in the ever-evolving world of television entertainment.
