CARRY-ON (2024) – A Middling Holiday Thriller That Delivers a Decent Excitement
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Carry-On is a by-the-numbers action thriller set in one of the world’s busiest airports, Los Angeles International, on one of the busiest days of the year, Christmas Eve. Rising British actor Taron Egerton stars as an airport security officer who is blackmailed into allowing a dangerous carry-on luggage to pass through security. The premise is, of course, preposterous, but the movie manages to entertain and keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Black Adam, Jungle Cruise) propels the plot at a breakneck pace, leaving little time for the audience to question the implausibilities. The film’s success largely hinges on Egerton’s performance. He proves once again that he is at home in the action genre, bringing a likeable persona and making the most unlikely situations seem plausible. However, Jason Bateman, who plays the antagonist, is less impressive, his character coming across as rather unlikeable.
Comparisons to Die Hard are inevitable given both movies are high-octane action thrillers set during Christmas, and in the case of Die Hard 2, also featuring an airport. However, such comparisons do Carry-On no favors. While Egerton is good, he lacks the charisma of Bruce Willis, and the action in Carry-On is less complex and on a smaller scale.
In conclusion, Carry-On is no Die Hard, but it is still a solid piece of action entertainment with a touch of holiday spirit. In a season flooded with romantic Christmas comedies, Carry-On offers a refreshing change of pace. Let’s be honest, sometimes we just need a break from all those mistletoes and awkward family dinners. And who knew that airport security could be so thrilling? So, grab your popcorn and buckle up for some high-flying, TSA-approved action!
