THE IDEA OF YOU (2024) – Anna Hathaway glows in this sentimental love story
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting much from this film which was promoted to look like the typical brainless romantic comedies that Hollywood churns out at the rate of a dime a dozen. Happily, I was proven wrong. The Idea of You is based on the best-selling romantic novel of the same name and has as its central characters, two star crossed lovers with an age difference gap of almost 20 years. Anna Hathaway plays a 40 something divorced woman with a twenty something daughter. She finds herself falling in love with one of the members of a successful boy band that she took her daughter and friends to watch perform in a live concert. Nicholas Galitzine plays the 24 years old boy band singer who had an instant attraction to Anna. He also gets to perform a few songs in the movie himself crooning romantic love songs to his lover. While the overall plot of the love story is nothing new, the film makers under the guiding hands of its director Michael Showalter, manage to make this all feel original and fresh again. More importantly, it succeeds in make this actually romantic!
I think much of the film’s success lies in the way it treats its subject matter. One of the things that I noticed is that they don’t feel the need to inject a bunch of juvenile or vulgar humour into the script. The characters are all allowed to actually behave and talk like normal people. They are also brave enough to let the many scenes between the two main characters just focus on the dialouge without any background music or visual distractions. Anne Hathaway has proven herself many times as being a versatile and competent actress. Being involved in this genre is probably just a piece of cake for her. Indeed, her performance showed much depth, effusing an authenticity and tenderness to her character. While Nicholas Galitzine did a decent job as the partner but could have been probably be better performed by some other actor with greater presence. I did not find his boy band routine and persona convincing.
I liked how the story evolved to show how the hate and toxic culture that is prevalent in society today can destroy peoples’ lives when people generally cannot just mind their own business. How does one handle the unwarranted attention and public scrutiny and being judged constantly? How our bittersweet romance ends and addresses the challenges was interesting and provided some glimmer of hope that a happy and mushy ending may be possible amidst all odds.
