What unfolds is an unexpectedly profound exploration of universal themes—personal responsibility, redemption, forgiveness, and, most powerfully, love. Drawing from the astonishing true story of Jeffrey Manchester, the film delves into the psyche of a well-intentioned divorced man compelled to steal in order to meet the material needs of his young family. Manchester’s signature modus operandi—breaking into businesses through their roofs—earns him the infamous moniker “Roofman.” His notoriety eventually leads to capture and a lengthy prison sentence, but his remarkable ingenuity is showcased in a daring, traceless escape.
The brilliance of Roofman lies in its refusal to dwell on the mechanics of crime. Instead, it steers away from conventional caper tropes, crafting a tender love story and spotlighting the beauty of human connection. Much of the runtime is devoted to Manchester’s post-escape days hiding in the most unlikely sanctuary: a secluded section of a Toys R Us store.
