Conclave

Conclave transports viewers to a world that is typically inaccessible. Based on the best-selling 2016 novel by British author Robert Harris, the film narrates the election of a new pope by an assembly of cardinals following the death of the previous pope. Set entirely within the confines of the Vatican, the papal conclave unfolds over several days as the electorate deliberates and reaches a consensus on the successor to the highest office in the Catholic faith. Naturally, the process does not proceed as smoothly as anticipated, as revelations of profound secrets emerge, culminating in a shocking final act. The story is filled with twists and turns reminiscent of the finest mystery novels.

What distinguishes Conclave is its cinematic presentation. The film’s cinematography frames each scene with a sumptuous visual quality, while the aggressive and punchy music score symbiotically enhances the tension. The intelligent script is delivered by a distinguished cast, including the ever-impressive Ralph Fiennes, supported by Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and the rarely seen Italian actress, daughter of Ingrid Bergman, Isabella Rossellini. Despite the gravity of the plot, the film is an engaging fun watch as each new twist unfolds with eager anticipation.

Director Edward Berger, who directed the multi-Oscar-winning German war film All Quiet on the Western Front in 2022, may have undertaken a project of a smaller scale with this film, but his mastery in storytelling remains as epic as ever. His undeniable visual style translates brilliantly to the screen. This is evident in the impactful visuals and set designs, such as the contrasting red of the cardinals’ robes against the stark white and blandness of the Vatican grounds. The detailed replication of the Sistine Chapel is so spot-on, you’d think they filmed on location. Close-up shots amplify the powerhouse performances of the cast, making every whisper and glance a dramatic delight. And let’s not forget the jaw-dropping twist at the end – it’s the cherry on top of this cinematic sundae. While rooted in fantasy, Conclave’s themes resonate deeply, delivering a movie that’s not only relevant but also an absolute blast to watch.
