Based on the best-selling 2016 novel by British author Robert Harris, the film narrates the election of a new pope by an assembly of cardinals following the death of the previous pope. Set entirely within the confines of the Vatican, the papal conclave unfolds over several days as the electorate deliberates and reaches a consensus on the successor to the highest office in the Catholic faith. Naturally, the process does not proceed as smoothly as anticipated, as revelations of profound secrets emerge, culminating in a shocking final act. The story is filled with twists and turns reminiscent of the finest mystery novels.
