MY FAVOURITE TV SERIES OF 2022

2022 has been another fantastic year for television programming. There was no shortage of excellent TV shows to choose from. In fact, there simply wasn’t enough time in the year for me to watch all of the series that were released. Once again, I find myself in the position of not being able to provide a completely comprehensive assessment. Nonetheless, I had plenty of options for my top ten list, which I am excited to share with you here.
My personal favorite TV show for 2023 was an easy choice! Once again, HBO’s THE WHITE LOTUS SEASON 2 was the best of the year. Nothing else could compete with the wit, originality, social messages and sheer entertainment value of this. Here is my list, in roughly the order of my preference:
- THE WHITE LOTUS SEASON TWO
- ANDOR
- HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
- TOKYO VICE
- THE CROWN SEASON FIVE
- EMILY IN PARIS SEASON TWO
- STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4
- THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER
- DAHMER MONSTER: THE JEFFREY DAHMER STORY
- OBI-WAN KENOBI

As I compiled my list, I noticed one feature that was shared by nearly all of the series. Great series always have well-written characters who are distinct and unique. Even the minor characters come across as people with distinct personalities. They frequently have unpredictable plots which in turn provides an element of surprise. Major ambitious television series are also given unprecedented amounts of money to spend on special effects, sets, and costumes. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The House of Dragon are two examples of how far television budgets can stretch these days! All of the ingredients are in place to keep the viewer glued to the screen and binge watch to our heart’s content.
It’s also worth noting that I have TWO Star Wars-related TV shows on my list. It is no secret that I am a huge and devoted Star Wars fan, and while the more recent Star Wars trilogy films disappointed me, I was pleasantly surprised to find Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi exceeding my expectations.
As with any list, I use this opportunity to point out what did not work for me. ARCHIVE 81, about an archivist attempting to restore damaged videotapes and becoming entangled in a mystery involving the missing director and a demonic cult, is my personal pick for the worst TV series of 2022. Really, it’s all very forgettable. But I’m sure there were far more truly awful series that I missed. The thing about TV shows is that if the first couple of episodes are bad, I can decide to stop watching them. What were your personal highlights of the year?
