After his acclaimed 2022 biopic, ELVIS, director Baz Luhrmann ventures back into the world of Elvis Presley with EPIC, an ambitious documentary that promises not just a tribute, but an intimate exploration of the legend’s life. While the title hints at a grand concert showcase, Luhrmann instead delivers a revealing portrait of Elvis that feels refreshingly authentic and deeply personal.

Luhrmann constructs the film by meticulously restoring and editing hours of previously unseen footage uncovered during his work on ELVIS. Departing from conventional documentary storytelling, EPIC eschews external narration entirely. The film is driven by Elvis’s own voice, masterfully edited to simulate a private conversation with the audience. This creative choice adds a genuine and immersive layer, allowing us to witness Elvis’s lighter moments—his jokes, playful interactions with musicians, and the camaraderie behind the scenes. The documentary focuses on the pivotal chapters of his life: meteoric rise to fame, military draft interruption, Hollywood pursuits, and his celebrated Las Vegas residency at the International Hotel (later the Hilton) from 1969 until 1976. Through these glimpses, Elvis is seen at his happiest, wholly committed to his craft, treating every performance as if it were his debut.

Notably, the film sidesteps the darker aspects of Elvis’s life, such as his failed marriage and struggles with prescription drug addiction, which ultimately led to his early passing at 42. This omission feels intentional—Luhrmann appears to reserve those themes for his biopic, preferring here to highlight the joy and artistry that defined Elvis’s stage presence.

Despite its strengths, EPIC falls short of fully satisfying its concert-centric promise. The documentary will leave viewers wanting more comprehensive stage moments and complete song performances, particularly given its running time of just over ninety minutes. Much of the concert footage seems borrowed from the 1970 documentary Elvis: That’s The Way It Is, which may warrant a revisit for those seeking a more complete representation of Elvis’s Las Vegas shows.

Still, what truly sets EPIC apart is the remarkable clarity of its remastered sound and visuals. The innovative stage-focused camera angles provide an up-close perspective, drawing viewers into the heart of Elvis’s performances. Ultimately, the film stands as a heartfelt tribute to an extraordinary artist whose passion brought joy to countless fans. As a companion piece to Luhrmann’s biopic, EPIC succeeds in casting Elvis Presley in a new light—one that celebrates the enduring magic of his music and the man behind it.
