MARTY SUPREME (2025) – Portrait of an Obnoxious Table Tennis Champion

Marty Supreme is presented as a loose adaptation of real-life table tennis champion Marty Reisman from New York, who rose to prominence in the 1970s. The film’s protagonist, much like his real-world counterpart, is depicted as a hustler and a quick-witted talker. Timothée Chalamet takes on the role with remarkable dedication, embodying Reisman’s slender physique and mannerisms. While these efforts lend an air of authenticity, much of the film’s narrative and the events portrayed are fabricated for entertainment rather than biographical accuracy.

The question remains: does Marty Supreme succeed as entertainment? While the film has garnered widespread acclaim and earned nominations across multiple categories, including Best Picture at the Academy Awards, its merits are not universally apparent. Chalamet delivers an outstanding performance, fully immersing himself in the role and transforming Marty into a distinct, believable character. However, this cinematic Marty is portrayed as hopelessly self-absorbed, selfish, and irresponsible—qualities that make him difficult to root for. Rather than feeling inspired, the viewer is left with sympathy for the characters he manipulates in his relentless quest for funds to compete in a tournament in Japan. The film’s focus on Marty positions him as untouchable, with the consequences of his reckless actions conveniently ignored, allowing the plot to progress toward its climactic finale.

Gwyneth Paltrow appears in a supporting role as Kay Stone, a fading Hollywood star inexplicably drawn to Marty. Her involvement in an inappropriate affair with him feels contrived, serving more as a plot device than a genuine narrative arc. Paltrow’s character lacks convincing motivation, and her presence seems intended primarily to showcase the actress in a less-than-flattering light.

The final match is undeniably the film’s standout sequence, impressively choreographed and visually engaging. However, the outcome feels predetermined and emotionally hollow, offering yet another fairy tale ending for a protagonist whose actions arguably deserve condemnation rather than celebration. Over the course of its lengthy two-and-a-half-hour runtime, Marty Supreme forces viewers to endure the company of a deeply flawed character, making the experience akin to an uncomfortable evening with someone unpleasant at a party.
